The Green Box

New objects would suddenly appear in our house. A thermos. An old spy novel. Two workhorse panini presses. If I ever wondered where they’d come from, I only needed a two word explanation – Green Box.
Growing up on East Pier, the green transformer box at the end of the dock was our very own take-a-penny leave-a-penny. A physical embodiment of the generosity of the community. A literal transformer – converting trash to treasure. One person’s discarded serving boards became one of my mom’s favorite pieces of kitchenware. A perfect vessel for a charcuterie smorgasbord!!!
Every dock has their version of the Green Box. On Gate 6 ½, it’s the low wooden fence near the dumpsters. Yellow Ferry has the bench near the mailboxes. So the locations might not be the most lux, but the treasures are!! They’re an opportunity to keep a well-loved item out of a landfill and give joy to your neighbors.
Recently, my dad was gearing up for a family backpacking adventure. He fastidiously assembled the gear, but the morning he was supposed to leave, he found he was short on one thing – a rope to hang his food away from animals. He set out towards the parking lot, already mentally re-routing his journey to include a stop at Goodman’s. But that day he was blessed with a little Green Box magic. There was a spool of paracord rope sitting there, like the universe knew just what he needed and made it appear.
Another time, our panini press had just broken and not one but two appeared on the beloved Green Box. We had those for years and made thousands of Turkey Pesto Paninis – one of the first (and only) recipes that me and my teen brothers mastered in our cooking journeys. Another time, one of my brothers found some running shoes that were exactly his size and still uses them to this day. But as much as it can feel like these items are just appearing out of thin air, they are generous donations from the community, a constant reminder of our interdependence.
Sometimes the joy of the Green Box isn’t just finding something you were already looking for, but discovering something you would never have bought and giving it a shot. My parents have read dozens of Green Box books that they never would have known to search for. And when they’re done, they put them right back out for another neighbor to enjoy. It’s the houseboat version of Oprah’s bookclub (one day we will compete directly for her market share, but alas, today is not that day).
One last Green Box gift to mention – one that was an accidental donation and through the thoughtfulness of neighbors, found its way back to our family. In one of our donation hauls, a memory book with handwritten answers by my grandfather got mistakenly mixed in. A neighbor discovered it and immediately knew that whoever it belonged to couldn’t have meant to donate it. After a long hunt to find the owner (taking over a year!), the floating home community and the magic of the Green Box guided this neighbor to our family and this priceless family memorabilia is back where it belongs, with a newfound appreciation.
So as you walk off the dock and past your very own Green Box, keep an eye out for something special – it just might be your lucky day.
